Artist of the Month
Sharon Mack
The Machias Arts Council (MAC) is proud to announce Sharon Mack as its April Artist of the Month. A founding member of MAC and its current secretary and workshop/event coordinator, Mack is a painter and mixed‑media artist whose work is deeply rooted in emotion, storytelling, and lived experience.
Mack works in acrylic, handmade papers, alcohol and acrylic inks, and ephemera, using color as her primary muse. Her pieces reflect the full spectrum of human feeling—joy, concern, hope, and grief—translated through bold palettes and layered textures. “What I am feeling absolutely comes through on the canvas,” Mack says. During the years her son served three tours as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, her work shifted into darker, more somber tones. Today, her pieces radiate color, shaped by the complexities and possibilities of our times. “I hope you enjoy my expressions.”
In addition to her visual art, Mack is a retired national award‑winning journalist who now specializes in creative nonfiction and memoir. Over her 35‑year career as the Central Maine Bureau Chief for The Bangor Daily News, she told the stories of countless Mainers. Her own writing has appeared in Alchemy Literary Magazine, Left Hook, The Feminine Collective, 3 Nations Anthology, Winning Writers, The Raven’s Perch, Working Waterfront, and more. She received the 2017 Prize in Prose from The 580 Split Literary and Arts Journal and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Mack lives in Machias and is the mother of six and grandmother to nine. She has also led a series of successful ocean‑side writing workshops, helping others find their way into creative expression.
Sharon Mack’s artwork will be on display throughout April at the Machias Arts Center, located at 277 Main Street, Machias. The public is invited to visit the gallery during open hours to experience her vibrant and emotionally resonant work.
Hearts of Machias: A Community Effort
The Machias Arts Council extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who visited, shared, and supported our Hearts of Machias exhibition. Your enthusiasm filled the gallery all month long, and your generosity made a real difference in our community. Thanks to artwork purchases and the many food donations brought to the gallery, we were able to deliver both a check and a full collection of non‑perishable items to the Machias Food Pantry.
We are grateful for your continued support of this meaningful local resource. The need in our community is ongoing, and we encourage everyone to keep the spirit of Hearts of Machias alive by supporting the Food Pantry throughout the year.
