Sharon Mack

Sharon Mack of Bad Little Studio is a lifelong artist, writer, and storyteller whose work reflects a deep connection between creativity, emotion, and the written word. Based in Machias, Maine, Sharon creates colorful mixed media artwork, acrylic paintings, handmade paper pieces, fused glass, mosaics, and assemblage works filled with imagination and personality.

Although Sharon began her artistic journey as a watercolorist, her style evolved into something brighter and more expressive. She shifted toward bold colors and simple shapes inspired by her brother and sister, both legally blind, wanting to create artwork they could experience through strong visual elements.

Words are an important part of Sharon’s creative process. She often begins with stories and messages written across a blank canvas, then layers paint to highlight, transform, or conceal those words. For Sharon, writing and painting are connected movements of expression.

“For me, the written word and the slash of the paintbrush are the same movement of my heart. The brilliant color is the music of my life.”

Beyond her work as an artist, Sharon has spent a lifetime embracing creativity and community. A former staff reporter for the Bangor Daily News for 40 years, she has also been a teacher, farmer, and worked a wide variety of jobs throughout her life. She is a graduate of University of Hartford, a mother of six, grandmother of nine, and a founding member of the Machias Arts Council, which began in 2013 in her living room with six local artists.

Sharon’s artwork is a reflection of her belief that creativity can heal, connect, and bring happiness. As she says, “I paint to heal myself, and if my work makes someone smile, I’ve succeeded.”

My Story

Where Words Meet Color

I have been painting and writing nearly all my life. For me, creating art has always been about storytelling—the stories we carry, the emotions we feel, and the connections we make with others.

My artwork often begins with words. I write stories or messages onto a blank canvas and then use paint to either bring those words forward or cover them with color and movement. The written word and the brushstroke feel like the same expression coming from my heart.

Color has always been a major part of my life. I love bright colors, simple shapes, and playful designs that invite people in. My work became even more intentional when I began creating pieces that my brother and sister, who are legally blind, could enjoy through stronger shapes and vibrant colors.

I create because art brings me joy, and I hope that joy reaches the people who experience my work.

My Artistic Journey

My artistic journey has taken many paths. I started as a watercolor artist, but over time my work evolved into mixed media, acrylic painting, handmade paper, mosaics, assemblage, and other creative explorations.

I have always been a storyteller. My years as a writer and reporter shaped the way I see the world, and that storytelling continues through my artwork today.

One of my most treasured pieces is “The Farm That Was as Close to Heaven as It Could Get.” It represents the perfect farm—the one I dreamed of, the one that existed in my imagination and on canvas. It is a reminder that art allows us to create places and moments that may not exist anywhere else.

I founded the Machias Arts Council in 2013 with six local artists gathering in my living room. Watching the creative community grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of my artistic journey.

I paint to heal myself, and when my artwork makes someone smile, I know I have succeeded.
