Daniel Reynolds
Daniel Reynolds is a painter, playwright, novelist, sculptor, director, and storyteller whose work explores the emotional landscapes of people, places, and the connections that unite us. Working from his home in Addison, Maine, Daniel creates narrative-driven paintings, theatrical productions, novels, and visual experiences that invite audiences to discover the extraordinary within everyday life.
Although much of his artistic career was based in Los Angeles, Daniel's creative journey has taken him around the world. Experiences working on international social justice projects, producing theatre, writing fiction, and meeting people from vastly different cultures have shaped his belief that our shared humanity is far greater than our differences. Whether inspired by the deserts of Morocco, the pubs of Ireland, the clubs of Los Angeles, or the art centers of Downeast Maine, his work celebrates the stories that connect us.
This summer marks the release of Daniel's debut novel, Stories of the Second Son, with many of the paintings featured in his Machias Arts Council exhibition serving as visual companions to the stories within the book. His work continues to expand across multiple artistic disciplines, including painting, theatre, literature, and education.
Daniel is also a driving force behind the local arts community. Alongside fellow artists, he helped establish Machias ACT, where his plays Wake, Scroogeport, and the musical Mental—written with composer Cindy Jollotta—have received acclaimed productions. Through every creative endeavor, Daniel remains committed to building community, encouraging collaboration, and reminding audiences that every person has a story worth telling.
My Story
Every Painting Begins with a Story
I've been creating art for as long as I can remember. Painting came first, but it didn't stay there for long. Before long I was writing plays, directing productions, sculpting, writing novels, and exploring every creative medium that allowed me to tell a story.
For me, the medium is never the destination—the story is.
What inspires me most are the people I meet. I've had the opportunity to live, work, and create in many different places around the world, and no matter where I find myself, I'm always fascinated by the similarities we share. Whether I'm walking through the deserts of Morocco, sitting in an Irish pub, working in Los Angeles, or spending time with fellow artists here in Downeast Maine, I discover the same hopes, fears, humor, and humanity.
Those shared experiences are what I try to capture in everything I create.
My Artistic Journey
Most of my professional career was based in Los Angeles, but storytelling has taken me far beyond any one place. I've worked in theatre, visual art, literature, and social justice projects, always looking for new ways to explore the emotional landscapes of people and communities.
One project that represents my creative philosophy especially well is the musical Mental, which I wrote with composer Cindy Jollotta. I had the opportunity to write and direct the production while also creating an immersive visual experience using my paintings. It was one of those rare projects where every part of my creative life came together.
Today I'm excited to be releasing my first novel, Stories of the Second Son. The paintings featured in my July exhibition are directly connected to the stories in the book, creating a conversation between written narrative and visual art.
Living in Downeast Maine has opened another meaningful chapter in my life. Through the Machias Arts Council and the creation of Machias ACT, I've found a remarkable creative community and lifelong friendships. Whether I'm painting, writing, directing, or teaching, my hope is always the same—to create work that helps people see themselves, and each other, a little more clearly.

Current Work
This summer I will be releasing my first novel 'Stories of the Second Son.' All of the paintings included in the July show are related to the stories in the novel, and show the different parts of the world featured in the book.
I am the featured artist at the Machias Arts Center for the month of July and will have an exhibit at the Rogues Bluff Community Center later in the month.
