Cheri Hudson

Cheri Hudson is the artist behind On the Rocks Crafting, a Columbia Falls, Maine studio specializing in handcrafted rope bowls, baskets, wall pieces, and functional fiber art.

Working primarily with organic cotton clothesline, Cheri uses the traditional art of coiling to transform one of the simplest materials into beautiful, durable pieces designed for everyday living. Each creation is carefully stitched by hand, blending craftsmanship with thoughtful design and celebrating the beauty found in natural materials.

Inspired by the coastal landscapes and islands of Downeast Maine, Cheri creates work that is both practical and artistic. Her latest collection explores the addition of repurposed madras fabrics woven into her signature rope bowls, giving new life to vintage textiles while adding warmth and color to each piece.

Teaching is an important part of Cheri's creative practice. Through workshops and beach sewing retreats, she shares not only the techniques of rope sewing but also the confidence for others to continue creating long after the class has ended. Her philosophy is simple: every participant should leave with a one-of-a-kind piece and the skills to keep making their own.

My Story

Finding Beauty in Simplicity

I've always believed that beautiful things don't have to be complicated.

My work begins with something incredibly simple—organic cotton rope—and through patience, stitching, and imagination, it becomes something useful, lasting, and uniquely its own.

There's something deeply satisfying about taking an everyday material and transforming it into a handcrafted bowl, basket, or piece of wall art that someone will use and enjoy for years. I love the quiet rhythm of sewing and watching each piece slowly take shape.

The ocean and islands along Maine's Bold Coast continue to inspire my work, reminding me that simplicity often creates the strongest impression.

My Artistic Journey

My creative focus has always been centered on craftsmanship and making things with purpose. I enjoy creating pieces that become part of people's homes and everyday lives rather than simply sitting on display.

Lately, I've been exploring ways to incorporate repurposed madras fabrics into my rope bowls, adding unexpected color and texture while giving new life to well-loved textiles.

Teaching has also become an important part of my artistic journey. Whether leading workshops or hosting beach sewing retreats, I enjoy sharing what I've learned with others. My goal isn't simply to teach someone how to make one project—it's to give them the confidence to continue creating long after the class ends.

One of my favorite creations is a handcrafted house welcome bell, a piece that reflects both my love of functional design and the simple beauty of handmade craftsmanship.
